Cisterns can be awkward to hold, so support the weight carefully. Do not lever the tank against the pan.
For low-level or high-level arrangements, disconnect the flush pipe as well as the inlet pipe and wall fixings. Take care not to place sideways pressure on the toilet pan or existing pipework.

Tighten plastic components by hand first. If a tool is needed for final adjustment, use it carefully. Overtightening does not necessarily create a better seal. It can distort washers, damage threads, or crack plastic fittings, resulting in the very leak the seal is intended to prevent.
After installing the mechanism:

- Check that the float can move freely.
- Make sure the flush control can be connected without pulling the mechanism out of position.

Attaching the Cistern to the Toilet Pan

If a small hole is accidentally drilled into a plastic cistern, silicone sealant combined with a suitable grommet may provide a patch. However, this approach may not be reliable for a larger hole, split, or cut. A substantially damaged cistern should not simply be hidden behind a temporary repair.
Once the wall fixings are installed:
- Reconnect the inlet supply.
- Check that the inlet pipe is not strained or misaligned.
- Open the water supply slowly.
- Watch the inlet connection, fixing bolts, flush outlet, and seals while the cistern fills.
- Operate the flush and allow the tank to refill.
