How to Clean a Bath Pillow

A person relaxes in a bubble-filled bathtub surrounded by lit candles.

A bath pillow is easiest to clean with mild detergent, lukewarm water, gentle scrubbing, and thorough air-drying. Start by checking the care label, removing any detachable cover or suction cups, and rinsing away soap and body oils. Clean the mesh, seams, and suction-cup areas without harsh chemicals, then dry every surface completely before using the pillow again.

The exact method depends on whether your pillow has a washable cover, mesh fabric, solid foam, or an inflatable interior. When care instructions are missing, hand washing is the safer default because it gives you more control and avoids unnecessary heat, twisting, or agitation.

What you need

  • Mild liquid detergent
  • Lukewarm water
  • A soft cloth, sponge, or soft-bristle brush
  • A clean towel
  • A well-ventilated place for drying

Avoid abrasive scrubbers and strong cleaners unless the manufacturer specifically allows them. Bleach can damage fabrics, foam, coatings, elastic, or suction cups, so it is generally not a good first choice for a bath pillow.

How to clean a bath pillow

1. Check the care instructions

Look for a sewn-in label, packaging instructions, or guidance from the manufacturer. Some covers can be machine washed, while foam and inflatable pillows may require spot cleaning only. Follow the instructions if they differ from this general method.

If the pillow has a removable cover, take it off before cleaning the inner cushion. Close any fasteners so they do not catch on fabric. Remove detachable suction cups if the design allows it, and set them aside for separate cleaning.

2. Shake off loose debris and inspect the pillow

Remove hair, lint, and loose residue by hand. Examine the mesh, seams, edges, and the area around each suction cup. These places can stay damp longer and may collect soap film or mildew.

If the cover is visibly greasy, do not begin with vigorous scrubbing. Soaking the washable fabric briefly in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent can loosen the residue first.

3. Wash a mesh bath pillow

For a mesh bath pillow, fill a clean basin or bathtub with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the pillow and gently press the soapy water through the mesh. Let it sit briefly if the fabric has built-up residue, then work over the surface with a soft sponge or cloth.

Use a soft brush or old toothbrush around seams, folds, and suction-cup openings. Keep the pressure light; aggressive brushing can stretch mesh or pull at stitching. If the cover is removable and its label permits machine washing, use the recommended gentle cycle and detergent amount. Do not assume every mesh cover is dryer-safe.

4. Spot-clean foam or solid pillows

Foam bath pillows should usually be spot-cleaned unless their care instructions specifically approve soaking. Dampen a cloth with diluted mild detergent and wipe the surface, concentrating on areas with soap residue, body oils, or visible marks.

Avoid saturating foam unnecessarily. Press the cloth against the surface rather than twisting or wringing the pillow. Follow with a clean damp cloth to remove detergent, repeating as needed until the surface no longer feels soapy.

5. Clean an inflatable bath pillow carefully

For an inflatable pillow, keep the valve and any openings protected from excess water. Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then wipe again with clean water. Do not use a stiff brush, sharp tool, or abrasive cleaner that could damage the surface.

Dry around the valve, seams, and folds with a towel. Allow the pillow to air-dry fully before folding or storing it, since trapped moisture can create odor and mildew.

6. Rinse until no cleanser remains

Rinsing is as important as washing. Hold the pillow under clean lukewarm running water, or repeatedly press it in a basin of fresh water. Continue until the water runs clear and the surface no longer feels slippery.

Do not twist the pillow to remove water. Twisting can distort foam, stretch mesh, or stress seams. Instead, press it gently between your hands or place it on a clean towel and press down to transfer moisture.

7. Wash the suction cups separately

Clean suction cups with warm water and mild detergent on a soft cloth. Pay attention to the edges, where soap film and hair may collect. Rinse them well and wipe them dry.

Before reattaching the pillow, inspect each cup for cracks, warping, or a hardened surface. A damaged suction cup may not hold reliably. The tub wall should also be clean and free of heavy soap film before the pillow is placed back in position.

8. Dry every surface completely

Place the pillow in a well-ventilated area where air can reach both sides. Hang it only if the manufacturer permits hanging and the fabric or seams will not be stretched. Otherwise, lay it flat on a clean, dry towel and turn it periodically.

Open or separate folds, press water from the mesh gently, and expose the suction-cup areas to airflow. Do not store the pillow in the tub, inside a closed bathroom cabinet, or folded while damp. The outside may feel dry while moisture remains inside seams, foam, or folds.

How to remove mildew from a bath pillow

For a small surface spot, first wash the area with mild detergent and a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly and dry the pillow completely. A diluted white vinegar solution may be considered for some washable, non-sensitive surfaces, but check the care instructions first and never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaners.

Mildew that keeps returning, has spread into foam or padding, leaves a persistent odor, or cannot be removed from seams is a reason to replace the pillow. Cleaning the visible surface does not necessarily remove growth or trapped moisture inside the cushion. Do not keep using a pillow with deteriorating fabric, split seams, damaged suction cups, or a surface that remains damp.

How often should you clean a bath pillow?

Clean the pillow whenever it has visible residue, a stale odor, or a damp feel. A quick rinse after each bath helps remove bath products before they dry. Wipe off excess water and leave the pillow where air can circulate rather than allowing it to sit against a wet tub wall.

A more thorough wash can be added to your regular bathroom-cleaning routine. The needed frequency depends on how often the pillow is used, how quickly your bathroom dries, and whether the pillow has textured mesh or folds that hold water.

Common cleaning mistakes to avoid

  • Using hot water without checking the label: Heat can affect foam, adhesives, coatings, or inflatable materials.
  • Applying too much detergent: Excess soap is difficult to rinse from mesh and padding and may leave a new sticky film.
  • Scrubbing aggressively: Hard brushing can damage mesh, stitching, and surface coatings.
  • Wringing or twisting: This can deform the cushion or stress seams.
  • Using bleach automatically: Strong chemicals may discolor or damage the pillow and are not necessary for routine cleaning.
  • Drying only the front: Moisture can remain behind suction cups, in folds, or inside the cushion.
  • Storing it in the tub: A damp, poorly ventilated surface encourages recurring odor and mildew.

If the pillow is still clean but takes a long time to dry, improve airflow around it after every use. If it repeatedly develops mildew despite careful washing and drying, replacement is usually more practical than repeated treatment.
