How to Clean a Silicone Shower Mat

A silicone shower mat stays cleaner when you remove it regularly, wash both sides, scrub around the suction cups, and let the mat and shower floor dry fully before putting it back. For routine cleaning, use warm water and a mild detergent. If the mat has soap residue or a stale odor, a short soak followed by gentle scrubbing can help.
Always check the care label or manufacturer’s instructions first. Some rubber and silicone-style mats are machine washable, while others should only be washed by hand. Unless the instructions say otherwise, avoid bleach, harsh solvents, high heat, and the clothes dryer.
What you need
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap or gentle laundry detergent
- A soft brush, sponge, or old toothbrush
- A clean towel or drying rack
- A bathtub or large basin for soaking
- White vinegar, optional, for soap residue and odor if the care instructions allow it
Do not combine vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals. If you use a commercial cleaner, follow its label and rinse the mat thoroughly.
How to clean a silicone shower mat
1. Remove the mat and inspect it
Peel the mat up from one corner rather than dragging it across the floor. Look at the top, underside, drainage holes, and suction cups. Pay particular attention to the areas where the cups meet the mat, since water, hair, body oils, and soap can collect there.
If the material feels sticky, cracked, brittle, or unusually soft, cleaning may not restore it. A deteriorated mat may also have suction cups that no longer grip properly, so replacement is usually more practical than trying stronger chemicals.
2. Rinse away loose residue
Rinse both sides under warm running water. Turn the mat over and flex it gently so water can reach around the suction cups. Remove loose hair and visible debris by hand or with a soft brush.
This first rinse keeps the scrubber from spreading grit across the surface and makes the remaining soap buildup easier to remove.
3. Wash both surfaces with mild soap
Apply a small amount of mild dish soap or gentle detergent to a wet sponge or soft brush. Scrub the top surface first, working over textured areas, openings, and edges. Then turn the mat over and clean the underside.
Use an old toothbrush for the narrow spaces around the suction cups. You do not need to press hard. Firm, repeated passes are less likely to damage the material than aggressive scraping.

4. Soak it if residue remains
For a mat covered in oily buildup or dried soap, place it in a bathtub or basin and cover it with warm water. Add a small amount of mild detergent and let it soak for about 15 to 30 minutes. Scrub it again afterward, especially on the underside.
If the care instructions permit vinegar, you can add some to the soaking water to help with soap residue and odor. Rinse especially well afterward so no cleaner remains on the surface.
A baking soda paste is another commonly used option for stubborn residue, but abrasive scrubbing can wear or dull some finishes. Test any alternative cleaner on a small, less visible area first, and do not use it if the manufacturer advises against it.
5. Rinse until the water runs clear
Rinse the mat on both sides. Pay attention to the suction cups, textured channels, and drainage holes, where detergent can remain hidden. Leftover soap can make the mat feel slippery and may attract more residue.
Run your fingers over the surface after rinsing. If it still feels greasy or slick, wash it once more rather than adding a stronger cleaner immediately.
6. Clean the shower floor underneath
The floor beneath the mat needs attention too. Rinse or clean away hair, soap film, and mildew before replacing the mat. If you put a clean mat back on a dirty or damp surface, the underside can become soiled again quickly.
For a floor with visible mildew, use a bathroom cleaner suitable for that surface and follow its label. Keep the mat out of the way while cleaning, and rinse the floor as directed before putting the mat back.
7. Air-dry the mat completely
Shake off excess water, then lean the mat against the side of the tub, hang it over a bar, or place it on a clean drying rack. Arrange it so air can reach both sides and the suction cups are not pressed flat against another wet surface.
Air-drying is preferable unless the care label specifically permits another method. Avoid the clothes dryer and high direct heat, which may affect rubber, suction cups, or the mat’s shape. Once the mat and floor are dry, return the mat to a clean, smooth surface and press the suction cups into place.
How to remove mildew from a silicone shower mat
Mildew often develops when the mat remains attached to a wet floor between uses. Start by removing the mat and rinsing away loose growth. Wash it with warm water and mild detergent, then scrub the affected areas with a soft brush.
If discoloration or odor remains, use a cleaning method approved for the material. Vinegar may be suitable for some mats, but it is not a universal treatment, and it should never be mixed with bleach. Rinse the mat thoroughly and let it dry fully in good airflow.
If mildew remains embedded in the material, returns quickly, or appears alongside cracking and discoloration, replace the mat. A porous, damaged, or deteriorating surface is difficult to clean reliably.
Can you wash a silicone shower mat in a washing machine?
Some silicone or rubber shower mats are machine washable, but not all of them are. Check the label before using a washer. If machine washing is allowed, use cold or warm water, a gentle cycle, and mild detergent. Adding a couple of towels may help balance the load and provide light scrubbing action, depending on the manufacturer’s directions.
Do not assume that a machine-washable mat can go in the dryer. Many care instructions call for air-drying to protect the mat and its suction cups. When there is no care information, hand washing and air-drying are the lower-risk choices.
How often should you clean a shower mat?
Rinse and lift the mat regularly rather than leaving it attached continuously. A quick rinse and air-dry can remove fresh soap and body-oil residue. Give it a deeper wash whenever it feels slimy, develops an odor, shows visible buildup, or has trapped debris around the suction cups.
Households with frequent shower use, poor ventilation, or a mat that stays wet for long periods may need to clean it more often. The condition of the mat matters more than following an arbitrary schedule.
A simple shower mat cleaning routine
- Lift the mat after use when practical so the floor underneath can dry.
- Rinse both sides when residue starts to build up.
- Scrub the suction cups and drainage holes during each deeper wash.
- Clean and dry the shower floor before replacing the mat.
- Air-dry the mat with space around both surfaces.
- Check the suction cups before each use and replace the mat if it becomes cracked, brittle, sticky, or difficult to clean.
The main difference between cleaning a silicone shower mat and washing a fabric bath mat is the underside. The suction cups and the damp floor beneath them need as much attention as the visible top surface. Regular lifting, thorough rinsing, and complete drying do more for everyday cleanliness than using increasingly strong cleaners.
