A wet room offers an open, streamlined alternative to a conventional bathroom, but its design places greater demands on moisture control. Because water is not contained by a traditional shower tray and enclosure, it can travel across the floor, reach wall junctions, and enter gaps around drains or pipework.
Understanding the importance of waterproofing for wet rooms is therefore essential before choosing tiles, fittings, or decorative finishes. A properly installed waterproofing system helps prevent leaks, protects the building structure, limits mould growth, and creates a bathroom that can withstand regular exposure to water.
Why Wet Rooms Depend on Effective Waterproofing
Unlike an enclosed shower, a wet room is designed so that water can flow directly onto the bathroom floor. Although the floor should guide water towards the drain, splashes and surface water may still reach walls, corners, plumbing penetrations, and areas outside the immediate shower zone.
Tiles alone do not provide complete protection. Water may pass through small gaps, damaged grout, unsealed joints, or connections between different materials. Without a continuous waterproof layer beneath the visible finishes, moisture can enter wall and floor structures.
Effective waterproofing—often called tanking—creates a protected area behind the tiles and other finishes. It reduces the likelihood of concealed leaks and helps prevent the gradual structural damage that can result from repeated moisture exposure.

A waterproofing system helps manage moisture by preventing it from entering absorbent materials. When combined with suitable drainage and regular drying of the room’s surfaces, it reduces the damp conditions that support mould growth.

Creating a Durable, Leak-Resistant Bathroom

- Cracked or unsuitable surface materials

A complete waterproofing system protects all connected surfaces rather than treating isolated sections. The floor membrane, wall protection, drain seals, corner reinforcement, and surface finishes should work together to create a watertight bathroom environment. This joined-up approach supports a longer-lasting wet room and reduces avoidable maintenance.
The Main Wet-Room Areas That Need Waterproofing
Waterproofing must address every surface and connection regularly exposed to splashes, flowing water, or persistent humidity. The floor is the most obvious area, but walls, shower zones, drains, corners, pipe penetrations, and changes between materials are also critical.
Continuity is key. A well-protected floor can still leak if the membrane stops short at a wall junction or is not securely connected to the drain.
Floors and Underfloor Structures
Wet-room floors experience direct and repeated water exposure. Unlike the floor outside a shower enclosure, the whole wet-area surface may receive spray or flowing water during use.
The floor should be formed with a suitable slope towards the drain. This encourages water to leave the room rather than pooling in low areas. The waterproof membrane beneath the finished surface provides a second and essential level of protection, containing moisture that passes through or around the tiles and grout.

Walls and Shower Enclosures

Standard wall finishes should not be expected to act as waterproofing. Decorative tiles and grout provide the visible surface, while the correctly installed waterproof layer behind them protects the wall structure.

The drain is one of the most important connections in the waterproofing system. Water is intentionally directed towards it, so the membrane must meet the drain securely without leaving an opening around its edge.

Reliable wet-room waterproofing depends on preparation, compatible materials, full coverage, and careful sealing. Each stage supports the next, so problems at the beginning cannot necessarily be corrected by adding more finishes later.
Product-specific application and curing instructions should always be followed. The following process outlines the main stages involved.
Waterproofing Bathrooms Without a Sunken Slab
A sunken slab is not the only way to contain water in a bathroom. Where this type of construction is not used, a fully bonded, liquid-applied membrane can be installed across the entire wet-area floor and up the walls.
The membrane forms a continuous waterproof layer directly bonded to the prepared substrate. It must connect properly with the drain, corners, wall junctions, and plumbing penetrations. The floor still needs an appropriate slope so that surface water moves towards the waste outlet.
This method can provide reliable containment for tiled wet rooms, but the quality of the result depends heavily on careful application. Gaps, thin areas, missed edges, or poorly sealed penetrations may compromise the whole system. The membrane should therefore be applied evenly and allowed to cure as directed before finishes are installed.
Step 1: Get the Surface Ready
Begin with a stable, clean, and dry substrate. Dust, loose material, dirt, and other contamination can prevent waterproof coatings or membranes from bonding correctly.
Inspect the floor and walls for cracks, holes, open seams, and gaps. These defects should be filled or repaired using materials suitable for the substrate and waterproofing system. Board surfaces should be securely fixed, and their joints should be prepared as required.
Preparation should include the areas around drains and pipework rather than only the main flat surfaces. A continuous membrane cannot compensate reliably for an unstable or poorly prepared base.
Step 2: Select a Suitable Waterproofing System

- Tanking membranes create a defined waterproof layer over prepared floors and walls.
- Liquid coatings can be applied across surfaces and around detailed areas to form a bonded barrier.
- Waterproof boards provide a moisture-resistant background but still require correctly treated seams, fixings, corners, and penetrations.
Whichever approach is selected, its components should form a compatible system. Combining unrelated materials without confirming their suitability may create weak connections at the very places where reliable sealing is most important.
Step 3: Apply Continuous Waterproofing Layers
Apply the chosen membrane evenly over every specified area. The completed layer should have no untreated patches, open gaps, or breaks between the floor and wall protection.
Liquid-applied systems may require more than one application, depending on their instructions. Each layer must be given the required drying time, and the overall coverage should follow the system specification.
Work methodically around the room so that concealed sections are not missed. Pay particular attention behind plumbing fittings and along the lower wall areas, where water exposure is frequent. Waterproofing is effective only when the barrier remains continuous.
Step 4: Protect Joints, Corners, and Edges
Corners and junctions are more vulnerable than broad, flat surfaces. Small gaps may form where walls meet floors, where boards join, or where different materials move in relation to one another.
Reinforcing fabrics, tapes, waterproof collars, and flexible sealants can be used at these connections as required by the chosen system. Important areas include:
- Internal and external corners
- Floor-to-wall junctions
- Board seams
- Drain edges
- Pipe penetrations
- Thresholds and changes in floor finish
These details should be integrated into the membrane rather than treated as an afterthought. Flexible protection is particularly useful where slight movement could otherwise cause a rigid layer to crack.
Step 5: Add Tiles and Final Surface Finishes
Do not begin tiling until the waterproofing layers have dried and cured fully in accordance with their instructions. Covering an uncured membrane can weaken the installation and trap unwanted moisture.
Use adhesives, grout, and sealants that are suitable for wet-room conditions and compatible with the waterproofing system. Waterproof grout and appropriate sealants help protect the finished surface, especially around corners and changes between materials.
However, grout and tiles should remain the surface finish—not the only defence against leaks. The membrane behind them is what creates the continuous protective barrier.
Waterproofing Errors to Avoid
Wet-room failures commonly occur because one part of the system has been omitted, rushed, or installed with unsuitable materials. Even a small opening can allow repeated water exposure to affect concealed structures.
Avoiding the following errors helps preserve the integrity of the finished room.
Neglecting Surface Preparation
Applying a membrane to a dusty, damp, cracked, or unstable surface can reduce adhesion. If the substrate moves or loose material detaches, the waterproof layer may crack or separate with it.
Preparation takes time, but it is fundamental to the installation. Clean and dry the surfaces, repair defects, secure boards, and prepare seams before opening or mixing waterproofing materials.
Installing Unsuitable Materials in Wet Zones
Standard plasterboard should not be used as though it were a waterproof surface in areas exposed to substantial moisture. Once water reaches an unsuitable board, the material may deteriorate and compromise the surrounding finish.
Use moisture-resistant or waterproof boards appropriate for the intended wet zone. Remember that resistant boards may still require a membrane and sealed joints. The complete construction, rather than the board alone, must provide the required protection.
Leaving Seams, Joints, and Edges Unsealed
Every point where surfaces or materials meet can become a route for water. This includes wall corners, floor edges, board joints, thresholds, drains, and plumbing penetrations.
Do not assume that tile adhesive or grout will seal these connections. Use the specified tapes, collars, reinforcing fabrics, membranes, and flexible sealants to maintain continuity across each junction.
Careful detailing at the edges is as important as waterproofing the main floor and wall areas.
Shortening Drying and Curing Times
Rushing the process can compromise adhesion and prevent waterproofing materials from developing their intended performance. Applying another layer too soon—or tiling before the membrane has cured—may weaken the barrier.
Allow every primer, coating, sealant, and membrane layer the drying or curing time stated for that product. Conditions within the room can affect the process, so do not rely solely on whether the surface appears dry.
A wet room is a long-term installation. Giving each stage adequate time is far less disruptive than repairing a concealed leak after the bathroom has been completed.
