Bathrooms combine water, moisture and electrical equipment, so appliance placement cannot be treated in the same way as it would be in a dry room. Electrical safety standards divide a bathroom into zones according to how likely each area is to be exposed to water.
Understanding what bathroom electrical zones are helps you assess where lighting, controls and other electrical devices may be installed. It also helps prevent a common mistake: assuming that any wired or water-resistant product is automatically suitable for bathroom use.
How Bathroom Electrical Safety Zones Work
Bathroom electrical zones are designated areas used to assess whether electrical appliances and fittings can be installed safely. Each zone reflects a different level of likely water exposure, from possible submersion inside a bath or shower to occasional splashing farther away.
Bathrooms are treated as special locations because electrical equipment may be close to water. An appliance that is acceptable in another room may therefore be unsuitable for installation beside or above a bath or shower.
The zoning system helps installers consider:
- How close an appliance will be to the bath or shower
- Whether the appliance could be submerged
- Whether it may receive direct water exposure
- Whether it is likely to encounter splashes
- What level of protection its enclosure provides
- Whether the appliance is otherwise approved for that type of installation
The required level of enclosure protection is normally expressed through an IP rating. Areas with greater exposure to water require equipment with correspondingly stronger protection.
To apply the zones in practice, begin with the bath or shower itself. The inside is Zone 0. The area directly above it is Zone 1, and the surrounding splash-exposed area is Zone 2. Space beyond these boundaries is outside the defined zones, sometimes referred to as Zone 3.
These boundaries should not be treated as permission to install any appliance that appears to meet the minimum IP rating. Product suitability, electrical supply requirements, installation instructions and the applicable version of the electrical safety standards must also be considered. If the position of a fitting is close to a boundary or difficult to assess, consult a qualified electrician rather than relying on an estimate.
Understanding IP Ratings for Bathroom Appliances
An IP rating is a grading system that describes how well an electrical enclosure resists the entry of solids and liquids. “IP” is followed by two characters, usually numbers, and each has a separate meaning.
For a standard two-number rating:
- The first number indicates protection against solid objects.
- The second number indicates protection against liquids.
In general, a higher number means a greater level of protection within that category. The two numbers must be considered separately rather than read as one overall score.
For example, IP44 has a first digit of 4 for solid-object protection and a second digit of 4 for liquid protection. IP65 has a higher stated level in both positions, while IP67 offers a higher level of liquid protection than IP65.

- Meets all applicable electrical safety requirements
Always check the appliance documentation for its intended location and installation method. If a product has no clear IP information or bathroom suitability guidance, do not assume that it is safe merely because it looks enclosed or is marketed as water-resistant.
The Main Bathroom Zones and Their Requirements
Under the bathroom zoning approach associated with BS 7671, the room is divided into three main zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2. The area beyond them is commonly described as outside the zones or Zone 3.
The basic arrangement is:
- Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower
- Zone 1: Above the bath or shower, up to 2.25 metres from the floor
- Zone 2: The area extending 0.6 metres beyond Zone 1
- Outside the zones: The remaining space beyond Zones 0, 1 and 2
A practical assessment should start at the source of water rather than at the nearest wall. Identify the exact edges of the bath or shower, then work outward using the specified vertical and horizontal boundaries. This is especially important where a light, mirror, switch or other fitting sits close to a zone boundary.
The zones determine the minimum water-protection level described in this guide, but they do not automatically approve a particular appliance. Placement must also follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and current electrical safety standards.
This distinction matters for bathroom sockets and wired devices. Being outside Zone 2 does not mean that every type of socket, appliance or connection can be installed without restriction. Likewise, an IP-rated product is not necessarily permitted in Zone 0 or Zone 1. The type of appliance, its electrical supply and its approved installation location all remain relevant.
Before selecting a position, follow a simple process:
- Mark the inside edges of the bath or shower.
- Identify Zone 0 within that fixture.
- Measure the area directly above it to establish Zone 1.
- Measure 0.6 metres outward to establish Zone 2.
- Confirm the appliance’s IP rating and bathroom-zone approval.
- Check that its voltage, connection and installation method are appropriate.
- Ask a qualified electrician to verify any uncertain placement.
Do not move a fitting a small distance simply to place it beyond a line without considering real water exposure. Zone boundaries provide a structured safety framework, but safe installation practices still apply throughout the room.
Zone 0: Inside the Bath or Shower
Zone 0 is the interior of the bath or shower—the area intended to hold or directly contain water. It has the greatest potential for water exposure because an electrical item installed there may be submerged.
Equipment in Zone 0 requires an IP67 rating. This rating provides the level of water protection associated with the zone’s immersion risk.
Appliances in this area must also be suitable low-voltage products. A standard mains-powered device should not be treated as acceptable simply because it has a robust-looking enclosure or a high IP rating. Both the enclosure protection and the electrical supply requirements must be appropriate for Zone 0.
In practical terms:
- Confirm that the manufacturer explicitly approves the product for Zone 0.
- Look for an IP67 rating rather than relying on general terms such as “water-resistant.”
- Verify that the appliance is designed to operate at a suitable low voltage.
- Follow the specified installation and connection method.
- Do not place portable or ordinary wired household devices inside the bath or shower.
Zone 0 requirements should be interpreted strictly. If the product documentation does not clearly identify suitability for this area, choose a different location and seek professional guidance.
Zone 1: The Area Above the Bath or Shower
Zone 1 is the area immediately above the bath or shower. It extends vertically to 2.25 metres from the floor.
Unlike Zone 0, equipment in Zone 1 is not normally submerged. However, it may still become wet because of its close proximity to the primary water source. It therefore requires substantial protection against water.
Appliances installed in Zone 1 require an IP65 rating or higher. The product must also be intended for use in this zone and installed in accordance with the relevant safety requirements.
When assessing Zone 1:
- Begin with the footprint of the bath or shower.
- Look directly upward from that footprint.
- Use the 2.25-metre height measured from the floor.
- Check any ceiling or wall-mounted fittings that fall within this area.
- Confirm an IP65 or higher rating and explicit bathroom suitability.
A ceiling light, control or other fixed fitting should not be assumed to fall outside Zone 1 merely because it is difficult to reach. The zone is based on location and likely water exposure, not on whether a person can touch the appliance easily.
The IP rating is again only part of the assessment. An IP65 fitting that is not approved for the intended bathroom position should not be installed there. Product instructions and applicable electrical standards remain decisive.
Zone 2: The Splash-Exposed Area
Zone 2 is the splash zone surrounding Zone 1. It extends 0.6 metres beyond the boundary of Zone 1.
An appliance in this area is farther from the bath or shower than equipment in Zones 0 and 1, but it may still be exposed to splashed water. As a result, electrical equipment installed in Zone 2 requires an IP44 rating.
To identify this area, first establish Zone 1 accurately. Measure 0.6 metres outward from its boundary rather than estimating the distance by eye. Any appliance positioned on or close to that boundary should be checked carefully.
Practical points include:
- Measure from the edge of Zone 1.
- Account for wall-mounted items that project into the zone.
- Check the full position of the fitting, not only its cable or connection point.
- Confirm that the product is rated at least IP44.
- Ensure that the manufacturer permits installation in Zone 2.
Zone 2 is a frequent source of confusion because it may look far enough from the water to be safe. However, normal bathroom use can still expose the area to splashes. A standard electrical device without a suitable rating should not be used there.
Outside the Defined Bathroom Zones
The space beyond Zones 0, 1 and 2 is outside the defined bathroom safety zones and is sometimes referred to as Zone 3. A specific zone-based IP rating is not required in this area.
That does not make it an unrestricted electrical area. Bathrooms remain special locations, and safe installation practices continue to apply. Equipment must still be appropriate for its environment, correctly connected and positioned in accordance with current electrical standards and manufacturer instructions.
This is particularly important when considering sockets or wired appliances. “Outside the zones” does not automatically mean that any socket can be fitted wherever convenient. The relevant rules for the type of outlet or equipment must still be checked by a competent installer.
Even outside the zones, consider whether the proposed position is:
- Likely to receive splashes during ordinary use
- Close to a basin, bath or shower
- Exposed to moisture
- Suitable under the product instructions
- Compliant with current electrical safety requirements
Choosing an IP-rated fitting outside the zones may provide additional protection where water exposure is still possible, but an IP rating should never be used to bypass installation rules.
The safest approach is to map the zones before purchasing bathroom electrical equipment. Confirm the rating and approved location of each product, and have fixed wiring assessed and installed by a qualified electrician. This avoids the dangerous assumption that a wired device is allowed simply because it fits the space or carries some form of water-resistance claim.
